La Petite Montessori Programmes
Practical Life
Children have an understanding of how many of these activities work, because they have seen them around home. Maria Montessori describes the exercises of Practical Life as the foundation for all future learning and it is one of the first areas a child is drawn to explore.
The exercises have been shown to develop the child ‘s independence, concentration and co-ordination. Not only do they learn to care for themselves, but also they learn to care for others and their environment.
Sensorial Learning
Montessori sensorial materials awaken the child’s ability to learn through their senses. The children uses a series of activities to discriminate among many objects by using their senses. The sensorial and pratical life areas prepare children to enter into math, language and cultural studies.
They help the child judge size, shape, taste, sound, and smell.
Language
The children in a Montessori classroom learn to write and read phonetically. This means they learn to encode and decode words by learning the sounds in the English language. Written letters are introduced in the form of the Sandpaper Letters so that a child hears the name and feels the shape of any sound he learns. From here the child will move to world-building. Metal Insects will also be introduce to develop the manipulative skills for writing.
Such learning will help child to address more formal spelling and reading work before they enter primary one.
Math
When children in Montessori are introduced to maths they are encouraged to link the abstract with the concrete, for example children learn to see the number 2 corresponds of 2 counters. With practice they go on to learn the decimal system, teens, hundreds, and thousands. When the children are able to recognise number, they go on to explore addition and subtraction, than complex concepts like multiplication and division. Other math concepts such as patterning, money, time, measurement and fractions are taught.
Knowledge & Understanding of the World
Specialised Montessori materials are utilised to teach about science, history, biology and geography. The child develop an initial knowledge and understanding of other cultures and the magic of the natural world. Children are given the opportunity to explore all this concept using a variety of exciting hands-on materials.
Art, Music, Drama, and Physical Education
Various forms of art, craft work and cookery are introduced to the children. As the children learn to think and create for themselves, they begin to develop preference character and a positive self-worth. Drama is a special love of many children this age it helps to develop children listening, concentrating and speaking skills.
